Ahmed Farhad Malik is a Kashmiri Urdu poet and journalist.[1] He has been associated with various media organizations including Bol News. Farhad is known for his strong criticism of the establishment. He often reported on the recent anti-government protests in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.[1] On the night of 14 May 2024 he mysteriously disappeared from his home in Islamabad. His disappearance sparked widespread concern, leading to legal proceedings and international outcry. Despite the pressure, his whereabouts remain unknown.

Disappearance[edit]

On the night of 14 May 2024, Farhad went missing from his home in Islamabad. His family saw him being taken away. His family alleges that he was forcibly "disappeared" by the country's spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), for criticizing the authorities. However, the Pakistan government denies that Farhad is being held by the ISI.[1][1]

Legal proceedings[edit]

After his disappearance, Farhad's family filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), requesting that he be found and produced in court.[2] The IHC ordered the present government to extradite Farhad by 24 May 2024.[3][4][5] The court warned that if Farhad was not produced within the stipulated time, they could summon Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his members of the cabinet.[6]

Response[edit]

International[edit]

  • Amnesty International called for an investigation by the authorities and said Farhad's "whereabouts are unknown".[7] They demanded that information be provided about Farhad's whereabouts and his immediate release.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Farhad originally belongs to Bagh district of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. His wife Syeda Rooz Zainab has raised her voice about his disappearance and alleged threats.[1]
