Parvaneh Etemadi (b.1948;[2] Persian: پروانه اعتمادی) is an Iranian visual artist. She is a painter,[3] draftsperson, printmaker, and collagist.[4][5] She is mostly known for her still life drawings on a cement support.[6] Etemadi is a renowned female artist in her hometown, Tehran,[7] but is also well known internationally.

Biography[edit]

Parvaneh Etemadi was born in 1948 in Tehran, and she was raised in Birjand in South Khorasan province, Iran.[1][8]

She attended the University of Tehran in the Department of Fine Art, but did not graduate.[9] She was mentored in painting under Bahman Mohasses,[6][10] and is considered his only direct student.

Her first solo exhibition was in 1969 at Ghandriz Gallery [Wikidata] in Tehran;[1][9] and between 1967 and 1977, she regularly showed her work there alongside other artists working in the modernism movement.[6][11] She has publicly said she does not like to be labeled as a 'woman artist' or as a 'feminist artist', and believes her work resonates more with the, "agony and ecstasy of poetry".[12] In 2019, Tarrahan Azad Gallery in Tehran held a retrospective of her work.[6]

Etemidi sat in front of Bahman Kiarostami's camera for eight months in order to film a documentary about her named, Parvaneh (2020).[11] Her work is in the public museum collection at the British Museum in London,[1] and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.[13]
